Senior Embedded Linux Applications Engineer
Ammortal Inc · Knoxville, TN, USA · USD125000-160000/yearly · via jobspy:zip_recruiter
Fit analysis
The candidate is an exceptionally strong full-stack architect with deep experience in large-scale IoT data pipelines and B2B e-commerce systems. However, the job requires specialized low-level embedded skills (C/Go proficiency and direct hardware bus protocol implementation) that are not demonstrated on the resume.
Where you fit
- Industrial IoT Telemetry & Monitoring: Developed Colony Watch for 1,800+ assets, establishing critical telemetry pipelines in Rust/JavaScript, demonstrating experience with large-scale physical asset monitoring.
- System Ownership and Architecture: Proven ability to architect complex, high-availability systems (e.g., B2B headless portals, centralized user portals) and take ownership of end-to-end solutions.
- High-Level Language Proficiency: Strong command of modern languages like JavaScript/TypeScript, Rust, Node.js, and React, which meets the requirement for at least one high-level language.
- Microservices & Data Integration: Extensive experience integrating disparate systems using GraphQL (Hasura) and managing complex data flows across multiple services, aligning with microservice architecture requirements.
- Operational Infrastructure Management: Experience designing and implementing scalable power and network infrastructure ensuring zero disruption during large-scale rollouts, showing strong system thinking.
- B2B E-commerce Expertise: Deep knowledge of B2B sales workflows, product catalog management, and optimizing complex enterprise sales channels (Shopify/Next.js).
Where you may struggle
- Low-Level Language Proficiency: The job requires strong proficiency in Go, C, or C++. The candidate's primary systems language shown is Rust, but lacks demonstrated expertise in the required languages.
- Hardware Interfacing Protocols: The JD mandates hands-on experience interfacing software with hardware over specific serial/bus protocols (Modbus, I2C, SPI, RS-485). The resume only mentions diagnostics and telemetry aggregation, not low-level protocol implementation.
- Embedded Linux Depth: While the candidate works on IoT infrastructure, there is no explicit evidence of deep familiarity with embedded Linux environments, kernel interaction, or system-level debugging beyond general application deployment.
- CI/CD Specificity: While modern development practices are implied, specific experience defining and upholding engineering standards for CI/CD pipelines in a resource-constrained embedded environment is not detailed.
Job description
Job Description Full-time Hybrid (average of 2-3 days in office per week) Mars Hill, NC $125,000 - $160,000 + benefits About Us The Ammortal Chamber integrates five science-backed modalities into one immersive 25-minute session. Our clients include wellness clinics and spas, sports teams and athletic departments, hotels, and individuals who bring the Chamber into their homes. We are a small team with a startup culture. Hardware and software engineers, health professionals, and operators work side by side. Since shipping our first product we have grown steadily, and the software that drives the Chamber is now at the center of what comes next. This role offers hands-on ownership, room to grow into technical leadership, and a direct hand in shaping how the Chamber works for the people who use it. What is this role and why does it exist? This role centers on Linux systems software for the Chamber: building and owning the application-level software that runs on embedded Linux and interfaces with hardware over common serial and bus protocols — the software layer that sits above the firmware and drives the product. You'll occasionally reach up the stack into frontend work as well, giving you end-to-end understanding of the system. At the senior level, you are a technical owner in this layer. You help make the architectural calls, set the standard for code quality and testing, and serve as a go-to person when a hardware-software problem needs solving. You'll work closely with the hardware team, OT partners, and the rest of the software team, and you'll help level up teammates who are earlier in their careers. Responsibilities Own the design and development of Chamber application software on embedded Linux, including hardware communication over serial and bus protocols Lead architectural decisions for our microservices-based platform and drive them through to implementation Define and uphold engineering standards for code quality, testing, and deployment Act as the technical escalation point for complex customer and field issues Maintain and occasionally extend early-gen Chamber software Contribute to frontend work as needed to ship complete features Collaborate with hardware, operations, and customer experience teammates to deliver end-to-end solutions Skills to Excel Systems Thinking: Deep understanding of how software, operating system, and hardware interact, and where problems tend to hide Technical Judgment: Makes sound architectural tradeoffs and can explain them clearly Ownership: Takes responsibility for outcomes, not just tasks; follows problems through to resolution Attention to Detail: Organized and methodical in development, testing, and debugging Continuous Learning: Stays current and curious across languages, tools, and patterns Customer Focus: Understands how technical decisions affect the people using the product Communication: Works well across disciplines and translates between hardware, software, and business needs Comfortable Multitasking: Manages multiple priorities and shifts context without losing the thread Team Collaboration: Works effectively in a small, cross-disciplinary team; enjoys helping others grow and gives clear, constructive feedback Requirements What technical knowledge do you need to perform in your role? Required Strong proficiency in Go, C, or C++, and at least one high-level language (Python, JavaScript, or similar) Hands-on experience interfacing software with hardware over serial or bus protocols (for example Modbus, I2C, SPI, RS-485, or similar) Deep familiarity with Linux environments, the command line, and system-level debugging Experience designing and shipping production software in a microservice or distributed architecture Experience with Git and modern CI/CD practices Understanding of software development lifecycle and testing practices Preferred Experience with MQTT or other IoT communication protocols Experience with Docker and containerized deployments on embedded or edge hardware Familiarity with Debian-based Linux systems Experience with Next.js, React, and TypeScript Familiarity with shell scripting (Bash) Familiarity with a project tracking tool (Asana, Linear, Jira, or similar) Familiarity with AI-collaboration tools and agents Qualifications Must haves 5+ years of professional software engineering experience, with meaningful time spent on Linux-based systems Nice to haves Previous experience in an embedded Linux, IoT, robotics, industrial automation, or connected hardware role Previous experience with real-time or safety-conscious systems Contributions to open-source or personal projects demonstrating depth in systems software Benefits Pay, Location, Hours Pay range: $125,000 - $160,000 Benefits: 80% health, dental, and vision covered. Flexible paid time off. Location: Hybrid in the Asheville, NC area. Onsite at least 2 days per week, can be more some weeks depending on current assignments. Relocation assistance available if you do not currently live in the Greater Asheville area or within commuting distance to Mars Hill, NC.
