Fit analysis

The candidate possesses exceptional modern full-stack engineering skills and relevant industrial IoT monitoring experience, which are highly transferable. However, the resume lacks explicit hands-on experience with core Operational Technology (OT) protocols and specific industry platforms like OPC or Ignition, representing a significant domain gap.

Where you fit

  • Strong web UI development foundation: Extensive experience building complex portals using Next.js/React and modern UI patterns (Tailwind), meeting the requirement for responsive design and JavaScript proficiency.
  • Database and Data Modeling: Proficient in PostgreSQL and managing complex e-commerce data flows, demonstrating solid relational data modeling skills required for operational use.
  • API Integration: Proven ability to integrate multiple third-party APIs (e.g., Authorize.net, Hasura), fulfilling the need for connecting external systems via REST APIs or web services.
  • Industrial Monitoring Experience: Developed Colony Watch and maintained telemetry pipelines for 1,800+ physical assets, demonstrating hands-on experience with real-time data aggregation, fault detection, and high-availability infrastructure in an industrial context.
  • Full-Stack Architecture: Expertise in architecting end-to-end systems (Rust/JavaScript backend, Next.js frontend), showing the ability to build modular and scalable application architectures.

Where you may struggle

  • Specific OT Protocols/Tools: The job requires hands-on experience with OPC connections, Kepware, tags, and historian data sources. These specific industrial protocols are not mentioned anywhere on the resume.
  • Platform Specificity: There is no mention of working with the Ignition platform or its Perspective module, which is central to the role's technology stack.
  • Python Scripting Proficiency: While JavaScript/Rust are highlighted, Python scripting—a required language for application logic and extensions in this role—is not explicitly listed or demonstrated in the work history.
  • Discrete Manufacturing Context: The candidate’s industrial experience relates to crypto mining infrastructure (Antminer fleet), which is different from the discrete manufacturing operations and SCADA/HMI concepts detailed in the job description.

Job description
Our client is seeking a Digital Manufacturing Engineer to join their team. As a Digital Manufacturing Engineer, you will be part of the industrial software engineering organization supporting complex discrete manufacturing operations at a heavy industrial US defense contractor. The ideal candidate will have hands-on industrial data integration experience, strong modern software development fundamentals, and the communication maturity to work independently on-site and translate operational needs into reliable digital solutions. Job Title: Digital Manufacturing Engineer Location: Remote Pay Range:58/hr w2 What's the Job? Design and develop responsive industrial web applications using Ignition Perspective, extending out-of-the-box components with JavaScript, CSS, and Python scripting. Integrate real-time and historical plant-floor data into scalable applications by connecting equipment and control systems using OPC, Kepware, tags, and historian data sources. Build modular, maintainable application architectures that support long-term scalability, reuse, and operational reliability. Work directly in the manufacturing environment during site visits to understand equipment workflows, determine required data, and translate needs into intuitive visualizations for end users. Implement robust error handling, logging, diagnostics, and technical documentation to meet performance, security, reliability, and compliance requirements. What's Needed? Strong web UI development foundation: HTML5, CSS, JavaScript, responsive design, and modern UI patterns. Proficiency in Python scripting for application logic, automation, and Ignition-related extensions. Solid experience with SQL databases and relational data modeling, including designing efficient queries for operational use. Experience integrating external systems using REST APIs or web services. Hands-on industrial/OT data experience with SCADA/HMI concepts and live industrial data; experience configuring/troubleshooting OPC connections, tags, and historian data is required (Ignition, Kepware, and Canary experience preferred). What's in it for me? Opportunity to bridge OT systems and modern application development to deliver practical solutions used on the plant floor. Work on highly customized digital applications built on the Ignition platform for complex discrete manufacturing operations. Field- and customer-facing impact—collaborate with operators, trades, engineers, supervisors, and managers to shape what gets built. Build maintainable, scalable solutions with strong engineering practices, including documentation and diagnostics. Immediate start availability with a confidential, possible 3-month CTH engagement.
